3 Things Your Dry Cleaner Wants You to Know

mystery stains.jpg

1) There’s No Shame in Telling the Truth About Stains
Let’s face it folks: body fluids, like blood and vomit, happen. If you’re a parent, you know this. It’s just part of the territory. When it comes to stain fighting, sure; you’ve seen your drycleaner leap over tall buildings in a single bound. Still, some stains are deceptive and tricky to remove. Providing your dry cleaner with as much information as possible about the origin of stains makes for a far better success rate.

2) Always Check Your Pockets
If this is not something you already do automatically when dropping off clothing for cleaning, seriously consider adding it to your list of new year’s resolutions! There is nothing more heart-breaking than realizing where you left those sold out concert tickets, your company credit card, or those pricey earrings that were supposed to be a surprise - after the store is closed, when recovery is often challenging. Besides; we hate ruining your special surprises when we call! It’s remarkable how often garments are turned in with items left in the pockets. Do yourself a favor and develop the habit: always check your pockets.

3) Avoid Spot-Cleaning DRY-CLEAN-ONLY Garments
We understand. Things are expensive these days. It makes sense to try to save your pennies everywhere possible these days...except when those attempts really just end up costing you money in the end. That’s the case with attempting to self spot-clean dry-clean-only clothes. More often than not, this simply does more harm than good, causing the stain to become set in, damaging delicate fibers, causing colors to run, and so on. This is definitely one scenario where the warning, “don’t try this at home”, applies.

How to Care for Formal Wear

formal wear.jpg

The Holiday Party
Season is Upon Us.
That means getting dressed up in elegant evening wear made of delicate specialty fabrics. Most of us aren’t accustomed to wearing taffeta, moire, satin, organza, silk, velvet, and hand painted or dyed fabrics every day. When we do, knowing the basics in caring for these expensive fabrics can help keep a party slip or spill from becoming disastrous. Here are some basic tips to help you keep your finest outfits looking their best.

CARE GUIDE TO LUXURY FABRICS

ORGANZA & SHEER FABRICS
  • Blot, never rub.
  • Rubbing the stain can damage delicate fabric fibers.
  • Note the source of the stain, and follow with professional cleaning as soon as possible.

VELVETS
  • Shake spill excess off of fabric before it sets in, then allow to dry.
  • Do not blot or apply pressure to damp areas, as this can cause stains to become set in.
  • Note the source of the stain, and follow with professional cleaning as soon as possible.

SATIN, TAFFETA & METALLICS
  • Here, the focus is on preventative action, as these fabrics are somewhat fragile and prone to abrasion damage and snagging. Be cautious in the jewelry and handbags you pair with garments in these fabrics, and avoid anything with rough edges.
  • Apply all perfume or cologne, deodorant, hair products, and makeup in advance, ensuring they are completely dry or set before dressing, as they can be damaging to these fabrics.

BEADS & ACCENTS
  • When wearing a beaded or otherwise accented garment, tuck a small sealable bag (a zip sandwich bag will do)  in your purse to collect any ornamentation that falls off during wear.
  • The repair department at your professional cleaner can reattach the ornamentation when you leave the garment for cleaning.

Caring for Holiday Linens

vintage linens.jpg
Holiday Dinner
It’s that time of year again. Are you hosting Thanksgiving Dinner? Christmas Dinner? New Year’s Day Brunch? And then there are all those special gatherings with friends and family in between. Are you ready?

In addition to decorating the house, and planning the menus, you need to consider how you will be dressing the table. Do you traditionally break out the vintage embroidered linens that Great Aunt Belinda passed down to you at your first anniversary, or do you reach for that incredible satin brocade set you found last season? Whatever your preference, it’s important to take the time to check the condition of your special holiday linens.

It’s heartbreaking to discover your favorite linens have been victim to untreated, undetected stains. From yellowed splotches of oxidized oil and brown stains from caramelized sugar or coffee stains to a whole host of others, it’s enough to make a grown woman (or man) cry.

But don’t despair. Sometimes those nasty stains can be completely erased by professional cleaning. If you love it, investigate. At McPherson Cleaners, we’re happy to take on all your tough stain removal challenges. And remember, after each use, have those special linens professionally cleaned. Don’t allow seemingly invisible stains like sugar or oil to tarnish your special holiday traditions. Besides, we always love seeing you!

Halloween Costume Cleaning: Mystery Fabric = Seriously Spooky Stains!

halloween.jpg
Halloween Weekend
Many Americans report that it’s their favorite holiday. Let’s consider the facts: bucket loads of candy, terrifying haunted houses, dressing up in all sorts of cool and crazy costumes, painting faces and bodies as creatively as possible, and a weekend-long license to trick and scare your favorite frenemies. Oh, and don’t let us forget how cute those little ones who can barely walk - look toddling along the lane in their costumes. Yep, it’s pretty clear why Halloween is enduringly popular.

Costumes beware!
Whether you still strive to concoct the most creative costume in town, or you’ve now resigned yourself to doling out bite size candies to the endless parade of gremlins and ghosts at the doorbell, Halloween is a big deal. And whether you’re a Halloween Mommy or Hot Mama, the focuses are roughly the same. After whipping up the best costumes, you’re focused on trying to keep the consumption of sweet candies and beverages to a safe level, and next, trying to keep all that face & body paint, artificial blood, chocolate, punch, and everything else from ruining Halloween clothes and costumes.

Borrowed or rented? Oh no!
For those wearing a rented or borrowed costume, a stain can become a serious problem. Depending upon the severity of the stain, a rented costume could wind up costing a lot more than you bargained for when it’s time to return the costume. Staining a borrowed costume could end up being quite costly as well - to your relationship.

Mystery fabric
The biggest problem with incurring a stain on a Halloween costume is that they tend to be made of seldom come with the fabric care label. Without knowledge of the fabric content, any diy stain removal you attempt may have the disastrous result of either permanently setting the stain, or worse yet - damaging the fabric.

Leave it to the pros
That’s why, as much as we want to help, the most helpful advice we have to offer regarding self-treatment of stains on costumes is, “just don’t do it!” Working to absorb a liquid stain before it has fully set in through gentle blotting without pressure can make later stain removal easier. Beyond that, when dealing with a valuable costume of undetermined fabric content, it’s truly best to leave it to the pros.

No need to scream!

Just Contact McPherson Cleaners. Our experienced dry cleaning experts are best suited to handle all of your mystery fabric stain removal quandaries. Have a seriously spooky stain haunting your Halloween wear? Drop it off at your neighborhood McPherson Cleaners location with any stain information you may have. Our professional stain removal experts will be happy to come to your rescue. Remember, McPherson Cleaners also offers a convenient pickup and drop off service.
