3 Things Your Dry Cleaner Wants You to Know

mystery stains.jpg

1) There’s No Shame in Telling the Truth About Stains
Let’s face it folks: body fluids, like blood and vomit, happen. If you’re a parent, you know this. It’s just part of the territory. When it comes to stain fighting, sure; you’ve seen your drycleaner leap over tall buildings in a single bound. Still, some stains are deceptive and tricky to remove. Providing your dry cleaner with as much information as possible about the origin of stains makes for a far better success rate.

2) Always Check Your Pockets
If this is not something you already do automatically when dropping off clothing for cleaning, seriously consider adding it to your list of new year’s resolutions! There is nothing more heart-breaking than realizing where you left those sold out concert tickets, your company credit card, or those pricey earrings that were supposed to be a surprise - after the store is closed, when recovery is often challenging. Besides; we hate ruining your special surprises when we call! It’s remarkable how often garments are turned in with items left in the pockets. Do yourself a favor and develop the habit: always check your pockets.

3) Avoid Spot-Cleaning DRY-CLEAN-ONLY Garments
We understand. Things are expensive these days. It makes sense to try to save your pennies everywhere possible these days...except when those attempts really just end up costing you money in the end. That’s the case with attempting to self spot-clean dry-clean-only clothes. More often than not, this simply does more harm than good, causing the stain to become set in, damaging delicate fibers, causing colors to run, and so on. This is definitely one scenario where the warning, “don’t try this at home”, applies.

How to Care for Formal Wear

formal wear.jpg

The Holiday Party
Season is Upon Us.
That means getting dressed up in elegant evening wear made of delicate specialty fabrics. Most of us aren’t accustomed to wearing taffeta, moire, satin, organza, silk, velvet, and hand painted or dyed fabrics every day. When we do, knowing the basics in caring for these expensive fabrics can help keep a party slip or spill from becoming disastrous. Here are some basic tips to help you keep your finest outfits looking their best.

CARE GUIDE TO LUXURY FABRICS

ORGANZA & SHEER FABRICS
  • Blot, never rub.
  • Rubbing the stain can damage delicate fabric fibers.
  • Note the source of the stain, and follow with professional cleaning as soon as possible.

VELVETS
  • Shake spill excess off of fabric before it sets in, then allow to dry.
  • Do not blot or apply pressure to damp areas, as this can cause stains to become set in.
  • Note the source of the stain, and follow with professional cleaning as soon as possible.

SATIN, TAFFETA & METALLICS
  • Here, the focus is on preventative action, as these fabrics are somewhat fragile and prone to abrasion damage and snagging. Be cautious in the jewelry and handbags you pair with garments in these fabrics, and avoid anything with rough edges.
  • Apply all perfume or cologne, deodorant, hair products, and makeup in advance, ensuring they are completely dry or set before dressing, as they can be damaging to these fabrics.

BEADS & ACCENTS
  • When wearing a beaded or otherwise accented garment, tuck a small sealable bag (a zip sandwich bag will do)  in your purse to collect any ornamentation that falls off during wear.
  • The repair department at your professional cleaner can reattach the ornamentation when you leave the garment for cleaning.
