First things first: while wire hangers are the universal hanger of choice for dry cleaners around the planet, this is not an endorsement of their use for everyday home use. As an authority on expert garment care, McPherson’s Cleaners wants you to know the best ways to help keep your wardrobe investment in the best possible shape. That’s why today we are talking with you about wire hangers.

So just why do so many dry cleaners rely on wire hangers for their customers’ fine garments? The simple truth is two-fold: not only are wire hangers incredibly inexpensive, they are also very thin - an important factor when space is at a premium. However, a wire hanger can quickly become an enemy to the health and longevity of your favorite wardrobe pieces.

Not only are wire hangers weak, and highly susceptible to becoming misshapen and even rusting, wire hangers tangle very easily and can quickly become tangled, causing your closet to look like a fight has broken out. You’ve probably noticed the stretch marks wire hangers often leave on clothing. They can be quite stubborn, and difficult or even impossible to remove.

You’ve invested a lot of money into your wardrobe. Why not protect and preserve it with the best tools for the job? The right hanger can be very important.

The Best Hanger for the Job:
  • Velvet flocked hangers - non-slip, compact, good for for light to medium weight garments
  • Padded hangers - perfect for delicate and heavier weight garments like sweaters
  • Wooden hangers - good for heavy weight garments like jackets, gives a professional look
  • Cedar or wooden hangers - a natural pest and moisture repellent
  • Suit hangers - excellent support for expensive suits, keeps related separates together
  • Skirt and pant hangers - allow for secure, wrinkle free hanging
  • Tubular plastic hangers - an inexpensive solution for light to medium weight garments

6 Summer Travel Wardrobe Tips

summer travel drycleaning.jpg

  1. Ensure that your clothes are in great shape for your trip by make sure everything is properly dry cleaned and cared for before leaving town. Unpacking your favorite summer staples from the suitcase only to notice undetected stains, missing buttons, or broken zippers can put a serious dent in your vacation enjoyment. It’s one thing to deal with a wardrobe disappointment at home. On the road with only a fracture of your favorites in tow, it quickly escalates to a catastrophe.

  1. Lightweight fabrics are best for travels. Not only do they keep you cool on your sunny, summer vacation, and layer well, but they will make it easier to carry your luggage while traveling! The lightest fabrics also tend to be the most delicate, so dry cleaning is often necessary once you return from your trip.

  1. Pack with diligent care. Consider investing in garment bags to protect your pristine, freshly drycleaned garments’ condition.

  1. Immediately upon reaching your destination, unpack your clothes. Hanging them in the closet helps avoid wrinkles and gives them a chance to breathe in order to keep their fresh state.

  1. A word of warning: packing and unpacking your garments on the surface of an unknown bed could expose your clothing to nasty bedbugs. It’s an unpleasant thought, but one to take seriously. If you are staying at a hotel or other unfamiliar setting, be sure to unpack your clothes on a table. Dry cleaning can remove bedbug infestation, but it is always best to simply avoid the possibility of the problem occurring.

  1. Home sweet home? You know what to do: take your clothes straight to the dry cleaner!  Slipping into your favorite garments often brings back sweet memories of the exciting adventures of your trip. However, delay caring for those clothes upon returning home, and you run the risk of losing them to undetected soiling that’s set in - along with those wonderful memories they bring to mind. We’ve all experienced the grief that comes with the loss of our most cherished wardrobe pieces, so act fast to restore them to their original condition. That way, they will be ready for your next expedition!
