Blanket Care 101
A blanket may be a snuggly and warm sleeping companion. It may be a beautiful, prized decorative room accent. It may even be both. No matter how you use a blanket, all blankets need to be cleaned eventually. For best results, there are a few basic guidelines you need to follow to keep them looking and feeling their best. At  McPherson Cleaners, we are committed to helping you keep all of your favorites and fine washable in peak condition. Take a look at this list of 6 Keys to Blanket Cleaning, and feel free to reach out to us at McPherson Cleaners with any questions you may have.

6 Keys to Blanket Cleaning

1. Follow Manufacturer's Recommended Cleaning Instructions
  • Blankets may or may not have care labels, as they are not required by the FTC
    • Check the Hang Tag: Always check new blankets for a care label. If none, look for directions on the hang tag before disposing.
2. Machine Washing
  • Most blankets can be machine washed.
    • Wash: Using cold to warm water on the gentle cycle
    • Dry: Line dry or tumble dry on low heat
3. Dry Cleaning
  • Most blankets can also be drycleaned.
    • Shrinkage: Dry Cleaning is a popular method to help avoid shrinkage
4. Electric Blankets
  • Can not be dry cleaned
    • Wash: Hand washing is the recommended cleaning method.
    • Dry: Line drying or short, low or no heat dryer spin cycle.
5. Wool Blankets
  • Require special cleaning precautions.
    • Avoid Heat: Machine washing in hot water or drying on high heat settings generally causes shrinkage and stiffening.
    • Care Varies: Follow recommended instructions on the care label. Weaves, knits and various dying processes can require different cleaning methods.
    • Wash: Hand washing is the recommended cleaning method. If indicated, you may also machine wash in cold water on the gentle cycle
    • Detergent: Use a mild detergent specially formulated for wool
    • Dry: Line dry or tumble dry on low heat.
    • Shrinkage: Even following recommended care instructions, wool blankets (like all natural fibers) may still experience some shrinkage.
6. General Shrinkage
  • The industry shrinkage standards for blankets generally allow for up to six percent after five washings

How to Avoid Bedbugs While Traveling

bedbug.png

Bedbugs Love To Travel

The holidays are over, but many people are still planning to do a little traveling. After all, what’s better in the middle of winter’s icy grip than a quick trip to someplace warm and beachy? Answer: a not-so-quick trip! But there is one rather unpleasant downside to traveling that you need to be aware of. Bedbugs. Unfortunately, Bedbugs love to travel too. If possible, they’ll be more than happy to catch a ride back home with you! Bed bugs have been known to stow away in clothing, luggage, shoes...you get the picture. Are you starting to feel itchy already?

Some Tips:

Research Hotels
Always be sure to carefully research the hotel online as thoroughly as possible. Chances are good that a hotel with a history of bed bugs also has a history of disgruntled former guests. Those guests tend to be pretty motivated to share their bad experience in an online review.

Luggage Racks
When you arrive in your room, avoid placing suitcases on the bed to open and unpack. To a bedbug comfortably nestled in hotel bedding, this is the equivalent of an engraved invitation. The luggage rack is always your best bet for a bedbug free locale to store your luggage.

Leave the Pillow
On that same note, always leave your pillow at home. If you must bring your pillow, bring a large, plastic bag with an airtight seal, such as a vacuum storage bag, to seal it in while returning home. Upon returning, be sure to place it in the hottest water setting available on your washing machine.
