Dry Cleaning for Dummies

For young college graduates like myself, dry cleaning has never been a necessary expense. The dress code for class did not include expensive suits, ties, or silk blouses unless a very rare presentation day came about. However, as millennials graduate and move into the working world, they realize that Nike shorts and oversized t-shirts won’t fly in the office environment. The girls have to trade out their sorority tees for blazers and heels, and the boys may just invest in a handful of ties and some nice leather shoes. It’s no secret that a starter job usually doesn’t pay the big bucks, and often young professionals have small margins between their paychecks. Formal and even casual work clothing is expensive to buy and difficult to care for. Most suits are made from materials that can be damaged and even ruined when washed at home. But don’t be deceived, many clothing brands label their tags “dry clean only” when in fact this is not the case at all. Don’t spend $3-$5 per pair of pants if they don’t need to be dry cleaned! However, there are some items that absolutely do need to be dry cleaned in order to maintain their quality.

·      Suits
·      Wool Clothing
·      Pleated Items
·      Items with a Lining
·      Items made with blended fabrics
·      Items embellished with beads, sequins, etc.
·      Items with set stains
·      Delicate fabrics (silk, satin, cashmere, etc.)
·      Vintage Items
·      Bright Items that may fade

That pretty much covers the essentials. The rest of your clothing should be safe in your washer at home. Just remember, it’s always better to trust the professionals, but if you’re really running low on cash, Satin and silk can be hand washed with detergent in the sink, rung with a towel, and hung to dry over a chair.

The dry cleaners aren’t just good for cleaning those expensive work clothes you paid an arm and a leg for. They are actually very handy in other areas as well. In particular, those chores that your mom always took car of when you lived at home. Maybe you never learned to sew, but your favorite sweater got snagged on a door handle last weekend at the martini bar, or those jeans you just can’t give up need some attention…

·      Clothing that needs to be altered or tailored
·      Jeans that need to be hemmed or repaired
·      Wedding gown and Brides maid alternations and pre/ post wedding cleaning
·      Comforter and Pillow Case cleaning
·      Curtain and Drape Cleaning
·      Fire Restoration
·      Leather and suede cleaning (including Shoes)
