Summer wardrobe season is in full swing. That means brighter whites, lighter weights, and more and more delicate fabrics like linen and silk are probably finding their way into a heavier rotation in your closet. While all of these things add up to you looking great at all of the warm weather celebrations, those specialty fabrics can require special care to keep them looking great as well. Here are some helpful tips from McPherson Cleaners to care for your summer fabrics and guarantee you will continue to enjoy them for many summers to come!
COTTON - A popular year round fabric, cotton is cool, comfortable, and especially great for hotter months due to it’s light weight and ability to breathe and absorb sweat. Available in virtually every color of the rainbow, you will want to check the tags to be safe, but we recommend machine-washing cold (to prevent colors from bleeding) and tumble-drying on low heat. Prone to wrinkling, it’s best to take it out of the dryer and fold or hang clothes up immediately. Many prefer to have their fine cotton garments professionally dry cleaned to best avoid shrinkage and fading.
LINEN - A beautiful, somewhat delicate natural fiber, linen is a light and breathable fabric that’s super for summer. Most linens are dry clean only. With a bit of natural wrinkle to it, drying linen properly is important to keep garments looking fresh rather than unruly. You’ll need to press it with a steam iron while the fabric is still damp in order to keep your linen neat.
EYELET - A beautiful, delicate design created in fabrics with the addition of a stitched hole pattern, eyelet is somewhat reminiscent of embroidered lace, although much more durable. Two main factors to consider when washing eyelet: 1) what fabric is it made of, and 2) how big are the holes? Reading the care instructions is the only way to be sure. For larger eyelets, you will always want to use a more delicate washing process, whether hand washing or dry cleaning.
MOISTURE WICKING SYNTHETICS - How to keep cool in the summer? Moisture wicking fabrics. Designed to absorb moisture and then let it evaporate—unlike cotton, which absorbs but retains moisture. Typically used in the construction of active wear, these fabrics require careful treatment, as they are synthetic. Most can be machine-washed cold and then line dried. For heavy soiling, use a pre-soaking agent first.
BATHING SUITS - The bathing suit is the queen of all summer garments. Created of materials designed for water, swimsuits require different care than normal clothes. As always, read the garment’s care tag and follow manufacturer recommendations. Many swimsuits will call for hand washing and air-drying. The washer or dryer can cause damage to the materials in your and result in premature wear. Rinsing out your bathing suit with cold water after each wear is key to remove harmful chemicals that may exist in pools, and prolong its life.
